Google made $10M over the past two years on medical disinformation from “crisis pregnancy centers” who target keywords related to abortion, including keywords for Planned Parenthood. These purpose of these centers is to convince women looking for abortions to *not* get one; when that doesn’t work, they do their best to delay care until it’s too late. So, when someone is searching for *abortion care*, they may think they’re clicking on a relevant ad, but are taken to an organization that provides anything but. Meanwhile, since CPCs are often registered as charities, many of them are eligible for Google ad grants, which makes these fraudulent ads free. Clearly Google isn’t concerned with whether or not they make a few million dollars; they don’t allow the ads to stay there because of the money. It’s more likely that they’re concerned with the PR hit they’d take if they banned the ads — and the cost of paying people to check the ads if they were rejected. Instead, they allow medical disinformation and promote organizations that injure women, encourage them to receive potentially lethal treatment (i.e, “abortion reversals”), and force them into giving birth when they’re seeking help. # highlights --- > The internet is increasingly full of garbage, much of it written by other confident habitual liar chatbots, which are now extruding plausible sentences at enormous scale. Future confident habitual liar chatbots will be trained on the output of these confident liar chatbots, producing Jathan Sadowski's "Habsburg AI"… >For all the money and energy thrown into "dark SEO" to trick Google into putting your shitty, scammy website at the top of the listings, there's a much simpler method. All you need to do is pay Google – buy an ad, and your obviously fraudulent site will be right there, at the top of the search results.
