According to a new study from Pew, 28% of Americans do not have a religious affiliation. This is up from 16% in 2007, and marks "religious nones" as the largest cohort in the U.S. 69% of them are under age fifty, and 63% of them are white. This cohort includes atheists, agnostics, and people whose religions is "nothing in particular"; most of them do believe in God or "another higher power". They are consistently liberal / Democratic voters, but are also **less civically engaged than their religious counterparts.**
